Cancer Maintenance Organizations (HMO)

Cancer Maintenance Organizations (HMO) provide their members with a single point of contact for all of their health needs. The primary care physician takes care of basic needs (such as general illnesses, physicals, immunizations and well care) and refers all specific needs to a specialist. In an HMO, members are not allowed to choose specialist doctors, nor are they able to go to a specialist without a referral from their primary care physician. Benefits of HMOs are lower co-pays and all-in-one cancer care. The drawbacks are limited service area, lack of physician choice and higher monthly premiums.
